Bigg Boss 3's consistency helps Colors hold on to top spot

Four weeks in a row, Viacom18 Media Pvt. Ltd’s Colors has held on to the top spot among Hindi general entertainment television channels, ending the week to 17 October with 314 gross rating points (GRPs), 73 ahead of its closest rival Star Plus.

Star India Pvt. Ltd’s flagship Hindi channel is at 241 GRPs, according to TAM Media Research Pvt. Ltd, a television audience measurement agency.

GRPs are a sum total of television rating points, or TRPs, over a period of time. TRPs refer to the percentage of viewers watching a particular programme at a given point in time.

The 10-year run by Star Plus at the number one slot was broken by Colors in April. Since then the ratings have swung with no consistent or clear winner.

Colors claims it is the success of the reality show ‘Bigg Boss 3’, which has maintained an average 3.2% TRP ever since its launch on 3 October, that has helped the channel gain an edge over its competition.

There is a buzz around big-ticket shows such as ‘Bigg Boss’ that draw new viewers to the channel who come to sample the programme, but end up watching others as well, said Rajesh Kamat, chief executive officer, Colors.

This effect has rubbed off on several of Colors’ shows such as ‘Na Aana Is Des Laado’ and ‘Uttaran’ that had in TRPs of 7% and 6.6%, respectively, for the channel in the week ended 17 October.

Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd’s Zee TV and Multiscreen Media Pvt Ltd’s Sony came in third and fourth with 232 and 165 GRPs, respectively.

The TAM data represents the Hindi-speaking markets in cable and satellite television households among viewers aged four and above, covering virtually the entire universe of TV viewers.
